Sorry no image for this one...

Hey guys... Fiona just informed me that my illustration got published this week in spectrum magazine... is there anyone out there who, if by chance reads this in time, could snag me a copy? I would be very grateful!

Le Blog Français

Salut mes amies! Well, our french cousins are well into blogging, as I discovered during my three month holiday in Strasbourg... And what's more their work is pretty magnifique, so I thought I'd share with you a link to the work of my Strasbourgious friend Tristan Pernet (pictured above)... Tristan's work is pretty mental as you'll see...he's also got an extensive list of links to other french student illustrative hotties, which are well worth a browse; you're bound to come across something interesting, and no doubt sexually explicit/ and or graphically violent. Bon appetit!

Hallelujah

Thankyou firefox, for you have facilitated by entrance into the world of blog! Yippee, i've finally begun mine...
However, my annoying enquiries are not over... the question i have is, how do i rid my blog- the title banner, and the images, that is- of that box that goes around everything? any suggestions? i've tried in vain to locate the magic, 'no box' feature...

this is weird!

fish art!

ps

That painting is called 'Beacon' by Chuck Gumpert, you can see it here: http://www.chuckgumpert.com

Some of his paintings are really beautiful

check this out!

Hey guys how weird is this!!! I was looking for an image on my computer and came across this painting in my folder... In my dissertation I'm doing a little section on consciousness and memory... how we store images throughout life in our unconscious... the theory is that these images will come out in/influence unconscious drawing! Another weird thing is that when my dad came to the exhibition he said the blue owl creature head i drew in our consequences sets (Lucy did the body and Fiona did the legs) looks really like a toy I had when I was little. CRAZAAE! especially when i thought those two drawings/paintings were my most spontaneous ones!

Monday, 15 December 2008

hey guys, here is my first drawing for my edinburgh fashion book! it's a bit ropey but hoping to do one a day so by degree time they might be good!

I found this little website that lets you browse interesting flickr photos by colours. Totally pointless but quite good fun.

<3 tea

Is it ok to buy copious amounts of tea just because the illustrations on the box are awesome? There are 21 types but I restricted myself to 3 for now.
Illustrations are by  Brett Ryder.

P.S. Hi! I haven't been anywhere near illustration for ages. This is due to the woes of dissertation, and not because I don't like you guys anymore. Hope everything is swell.

Aaaargh

Grrr, despite following your advice Lizzy, still impossible to load my header... And my attempts to commandeer Wordpress result in an internet crash! The world of blog seems determined to exclude me...sniff... The image is now as low quality as it's possible to get, saved for web, less than 660 pixels wide etc, small... what is to done i wonder...

TRAMPS!!!

noooooooo! someone stole my comments book from the forest cafe! and the pen! AND there is dirty water sprayed all over my work! :'( i can't put those in my portfolio now! aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah sniff sniff tears sniff. so if anyone wants to see the xhibition go soon as think i'll take it down early!

Awkward deer thing

I think I like the sketch better...
Result of a tangent sketch that turned into a multiple-hour rough

I hate scanning!

I can't believe how long it takes to scan things in! It's taken me all day to deal with 2o pictures. Here are some of them - for my gardening project which I'm looking forward to finishing so I can stop drawing in such a tight accurate way, it's very tiring.

Technical Assistance Required

Hello,
Yes, it's an exciting enquiry from my good self- here's the problem: in setting up my own blog many a time I have tried in vain to upload an image to replace the well-naff title banner that otherwise comes up....It just won't upload- it comes up with that 'loading image' circling icon for indefinate periods- grrrr! Hence the still very embryonic state of the blog- don't really want to start it off til it's looking decent. I shrunk down the image to the 660pixels, reduced the dpi and all that, but to no avail! Anyone got any suggestions as to why this might be happening?
Thanks in advance me lovlies...

I'm sketching but it has no application...

Here's a character sketch that I like, but sadly has no context/application/use. Still, any feedback/suggestions would be welcome.
Congrats on the exhibition Lizzy - sorry I can't make it tonight!
I hope everyone is enjoying our dissertation week (cough). See you all on monday night? yes?

Last minute piece of shameless self promotion!

Hey Gang!
Nothing to do this evening? Come to analogue from 7pm (or at least i think its 7pm) to see None The Less an exhibition put together by Shea'la Finch the evil genius behind Tiny Showcase.
There's something kerazy like 60 prints on show and one of them is..ahem..mine. But dont come for that because you'll be dissappointed (its a bit pants), come for the other 59 or something prints from the last three years of the website. There's going to be some AMAZING artwork on show and also free drinks.

See you later? Yes? YES!

i am a wizard...

apparently! well. for those who don't already know... ok this is how to make a sentence into a link:
highlight the text you want (is best to do it after you've typed everything you want to type) to make int0 a link, then there is a little icon next to the one for the text colour, it is a little globe with a paperclip-type thing on it. click on that and put in the link you want and ta-da! done! hope this helps...

sketch book time

here are some preliminary drawings for my mini self promo pack:

The Red Shoes

My flatmate Rosie got a really really beautiful book adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson's The Red Shoes, illustrated by Sun Yung Yoo. The only image I can find is one of the front cover, but the insides are quite lovely too.

Also Harvey asked me to remind everyone that the deadline for the V&A here http://www.vam.ac.uk/activ_events/events/illustration_awards/studentillustrator/2008-student/index.php is the 31st of December. Its quite a good one, you can enter up to 3 images of your work, online and there is a £2000 and £1000 award.

flat-packed christmas tree. yay!

Banner

I made a banner for the blog today when I was meant to be doing other things. I thin we should take it in turns to make banners and make the place look nice.

my collection of creepy Illustrators!

Hello. A couple of you commented on this picture that's in my CVCS Questionnaire. It's called The Fall by Anne-Julie Aubry. She does quite a lot of freaky fairytale-esk drawings that some of you might be interested in. Also along the same lines is Beatrice Billard - I think they've both been exposed to too much Tim Burton!

Also I hope you've all noticed Jill's e-mail about Professional practice next week. We've been set homework for the weekend!
See you at the fair tomorrow.

Travel Bug

Mmm travel posters. They don't make them like they used to.
Speaking of travel, I would just like to put this out there... I'm thinking of exercising my passport this spring - with Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, and maybe Paris in mind. RyanAir has return flights for under 20 pounds at the moment, flying to dublin then Barcelona, and then maybe hopping over to mallorca for a bit, and back again. Anyone not going home/ not being sensible about cash is welcome to join me :D
I booked an 8 pound return flight to paris in february for no reason and i think I've protracted some incurable travel bug. Also, a random desire to design travel posters that just might manifest itself in my degree show.

Well done everyone on the christmas cards, they look great! Special thanks here to Kirsten and Gen who did most of the leg work for that. See you all on Sunday

Paintings

Here are some paintings I've been working on for my disseration... if anyone has any ideas/critisism/love/hate for them I'd be very happy.

Keep Calm and Carry On

‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ invites you to enter into the cavernous underground of Edinburgh’s Old Town for a unique exhibition by graduating students from the ECA. Presenting mixed media work the show dwells temporarily within a lost, subterranean space, inhabiting abandoned rooms and dark chambers.

Opening Wednesday 26th November: 7pm- 10pm
Then 10am- 6pm on the 27th and 28th

Location: 39 Nidry Street, Cowgate (Next to Bannerman's and the Hive)

Sarah, Ursula and I as well as many others are showing work... Hope you can make it along!

A Request

Can this fine woman join Biff? She can't really draw but I think she'll bring some much needed glamour. She will also provide security.

Another BBC4 documentary

BBC4 seem quite fond of children's book illustration at the moment. There's a documentary on tonight Mark Lawson talks to Quentin Blake if anyone is interested. It's at 10.30 BBC4.

How to brighten up your pavements...

I found these brilliant drawings that someone has done on pavements - they look so 3D! Much better than the ones in Mary Poppins! There's loads more here if you want a look.

P.S. I hope you're all working away at things to sell at the craft fair, only a week left!

Alice Duke

Here's a couple images by last year's eca illustration graduate, Alice Duke. Check out her blog here: http://alicedraws.blogspot.com/
Her work makes me really excited/really depressed because I wish I could do that! She's got some really great stuff. Have a look, there's lots of really nice pencil sketches on her blog.

Thursday, 13 November 2008

So I havent done a 'nice things' type post for a while so i figured I'd post one of my favourite illustrators/artists in the whole wide world ever. Maxwell Loren Holyoke Hirsch is a San Fransisco based artist with a massive amount of really nice work from painting, to photography to woodcuts.

Edible Prints and Glow-in-the-Dark Ink

I found these edible prints when searching exciting editorials for Fiona.. A girl at st martins did them for the guardian i think... she has other cool stuff on her website, like glow in the dark books which look blank during the day...

The wonderful world of XKCD, and of internet generally.

"I am not a ninja"
I thought I'd introduce anyone who doesn't know of it to the wonderful world of XKCD (www.xkcd.com). All by a random guy who one day started posting math comics and now has a huge following and tshirts and other things. Proof that Illustation can come from and go in the strangest places....

Also a wee note here about the odd workings of the universe (and the internet)... 8 or 9 years ago, maybe more, I had a pen pal in Italy. I can barely even remember it. So anyway, we lost contact all those years ago, and today I got a facebook message from him. Something to the effect of: "Remember me? We were pen pals. My english isn't as good as it used to be, but I'm studying electronic engineering in Italy. Oh I don't play soccer anymore."
The world is a very small place, and made very, very, very weird by modern life and internet.
On that note, I'll leave you with an appropriate xkcd comic on the subject... http://xkcd.com/490/
