The Red Shoes
My flatmate Rosie got a really really beautiful book adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson's The Red Shoes, illustrated by Sun Yung Yoo. The only image I can find is one of the front cover, but the insides are quite lovely too.
Also Harvey asked me to remind everyone that the deadline for the V&A here http://www.vam.ac.uk/activ_events/events/illustration_awards/studentillustrator/2008-student/index.php is the 31st of December. Its quite a good one, you can enter up to 3 images of your work, online and there is a £2000 and £1000 award.

Click on the link above and enjoy some quality BIFF-related procrastination. I'm off to finish my pricing quotes for tomorrow, but meanwhile I found time to google BIFF.... Enjoy.

Banner
I made a banner for the blog today when I was meant to be doing other things. I thin we should take it in turns to make banners and make the place look nice.

my collection of creepy Illustrators!
Hello. A couple of you commented on this picture that's in my CVCS Questionnaire. It's called The Fall by Anne-Julie Aubry. She does quite a lot of freaky fairytale-esk drawings that some of you might be interested in. Also along the same lines is Beatrice Billard - I think they've both been exposed to too much Tim Burton!
Also I hope you've all noticed Jill's e-mail about Professional practice next week. We've been set homework for the weekend!
See you at the fair tomorrow.
Travel Bug
Mmm travel posters. They don't make them like they used to.
Speaking of travel, I would just like to put this out there... I'm thinking of exercising my passport this spring - with Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, and maybe Paris in mind. RyanAir has return flights for under 20 pounds at the moment, flying to dublin then Barcelona, and then maybe hopping over to mallorca for a bit, and back again. Anyone not going home/ not being sensible about cash is welcome to join me :D
I booked an 8 pound return flight to paris in february for no reason and i think I've protracted some incurable travel bug. Also, a random desire to design travel posters that just might manifest itself in my degree show.
Well done everyone on the christmas cards, they look great! Special thanks here to Kirsten and Gen who did most of the leg work for that. See you all on Sunday

A Request
Another BBC4 documentary
How to brighten up your pavements...
I found these brilliant drawings that someone has done on pavements - they look so 3D! Much better than the ones in Mary Poppins! There's loads more here if you want a look.
P.S. I hope you're all working away at things to sell at the craft fair, only a week left!

Alice Duke
Here's a couple images by last year's eca illustration graduate, Alice Duke. Check out her blog here: http://alicedraws.blogspot.com/
Her work makes me really excited/really depressed because I wish I could do that! She's got some really great stuff. Have a look, there's lots of really nice pencil sketches on her blog.

So I havent done a 'nice things' type post for a while so i figured I'd post one of my favourite illustrators/artists in the whole wide world ever. Maxwell Loren Holyoke Hirsch is a San Fransisco based artist with a massive amount of really nice work from painting, to photography to woodcuts.

The wonderful world of XKCD, and of internet generally.
"I am not a ninja"
I thought I'd introduce anyone who doesn't know of it to the wonderful world of XKCD (www.xkcd.com). All by a random guy who one day started posting math comics and now has a huge following and tshirts and other things. Proof that Illustation can come from and go in the strangest places....Also a wee note here about the odd workings of the universe (and the internet)... 8 or 9 years ago, maybe more, I had a pen pal in Italy. I can barely even remember it. So anyway, we lost contact all those years ago, and today I got a facebook message from him. Something to the effect of: "Remember me? We were pen pals. My english isn't as good as it used to be, but I'm studying electronic engineering in Italy. Oh I don't play soccer anymore."
The world is a very small place, and made very, very, very weird by modern life and internet.
On that note, I'll leave you with an appropriate xkcd comic on the subject... http://xkcd.com/490/
Sasek
Inspired by your Sasek comment Lizzy I thought I'd post these images of his lovely work from the book 'This is Edinburgh'... He did a whole series of books on different cities- Paris, London, Venice, New York, etc, but there is something really enjoyable about recognising the places in this one! I'd been looking at this again recently in fact... He has a really charming way of drawing buildings, and the figures are equally so, i hope you'll agree...
Been working most of the day on Jim's letterhead/invoice project; been really enjoying it, and i'm glad jim's had the foresight to make us design something that can hopefully have a life and use beyond college! See you on friday...
David Klein
Some great poster art from the 50s/60s by David Klein. Lovely lettering and colours... (via Drawn) Hope everyone is having a good week... I have been sorting boring things like banking and tax today. fun. and un-productive! oh dear...

Inspiration!
Hello everyone! I don't know who's doing well/ being productive, but I'm certainly not. Damn you, artists block. So, in the name of productivity (ironically, posted out of procrastination) I give you Nike of Samothrace, which in my opinion is the most beautiful piece of artwork ever created, and forever my favorite above all else. I know we have a copy in the Sculpture court, but as she is shoved haphazardly under an arch in the corner I don't think people really appreciate how spectacular she really is.

YAY!
Oh my gosh. Thankyou so so much to you guys for coming to After School Club last night. I am so so grateful to all of you. You're amazing. All of the speakers involved had an amazing time and they seemed to be as inspired as we were to do some awesome things! Yeah! I havent sorted out the photos yet so instead I've posted a pic of one of my (multitudinous) bags as i think the look on the cats face pretty much sums up how I'm feeling.
Oh and in response to Gen's earlier post about some kind of collab thing what do you reckon we go and buy a few sheets of A0 card from the shop and have our own nous vous style drawing club one evening? that would be super fun!
THANKYOU BIFF. I am so happy that you are my classmates. YOU WIN!

Picture Book
I hope everyone took an hour out of dissertation hell to watch picture book on bb4 last night... If (like me, who was, rather unwisely, at her boyfriends (who turns out not to have bb4!), not doing work) you missed it catch it on iplayer, here. it's really worth watching. do it!

Collaboration Station
Hey guys, I'd really like to do some collaborative drawing.. is anyone up for doing some next week? I know Kirsten is interested.... still really up for doing our monster book! Is anyone else? I've planned to do some as part of my dissertation but it could evolve into some really innovative and exciting work if you guys get invovled (and it would be an excellent talking point in your portfolio)... The drawings I have planned are totally fun and playful. Here are some examples of what I was thinking of.
